Oct 9 - Desolation Lake (Big Cottonwood Canyon)

Sunny day with highs again in the low 80s.

Finally, taking my yearly trek up to Desolation Lake. The trek is usually timed to hopefully see the Fall colors but I'm late this year and most of the leaves have already dropped. But it'll be beautiful I know it.

I start after 8am. It's in the 40s and a bit cool but the constant climb warms me up quickly.

There's still color between the trail head and the intersection with the Dog Lake trail.

This is looking back to where I started.

Nearing that intersection.

Pretty in the shade; I can't wait to see it when the sun is shining.

Quiet walk on the way up. The exciting moment was hearing loud rustling in the woods but it was only a hunter. :(

I reach the meadow and yes, the leaves are long gone; only naked aspen trunks/branches.

I head over to the lake. There are great reflections of those naked trees in the water.

As I head around, I find moose, elk

and deer tracks around the lake.

I complete the loop and head up to the Wasatch Crest. I absolutely love it up there sitting on the ridge. One side is Park City and the other side one can see all the way to the Salt Lake Valley. Unfortunately, it's a 300+ft in 1/2 mile climb. Today, for some reason, it was easy (even with tired legs).

I walk just a portion of the ridge above Desolation Lake.

And then find a good spot on the ridge to have lunch - I'm starving!! (I find out it's not even 11am - I guess it's a peanut butter sandwich snack.)

I find a spot looking down on Park City.

After a quick rest. it's time to head back. But first, I spot for a Sulphur still flying.

The yellow aspens trees, when I reach them, look great!

Then < mile from my car, some movement catches my ear. There are 4 deer (all doe with 1 fawn) are heading down to the stream for a midday drink. I stand and watch.

Great day! My longest hike of the year (8-9 miles) and greatest elevation gain (2500 ft).
