Aug 29 - Catherine's Pass (Little Cottonwood Canyon)

There's no rain in the forecast but I wake to hear raindrops hitting my tents. It happens several times during the night/early morning. Hope it stops soon.

Also, the hard ground wasn't a problem when I first laid down but the ground is getting harder as the night goes on. :)

I wake at 6am to more raindrops but it stops quickly. Around 6:30, I start moving, eat breakfast (a peanut butter sandwich) and start off on the trail at my site again to walk up to Catherine's Pass and beyond.

It's very cloudy but the sun is starting to peek out. Makes for an colorful walk to the Catherine's Pass trail.

I keep my eyes open for moose/deer but seeing nothing on the way to the Catherine's Pass trail.

I reach the trail intersection and start my way up to Catherine's Pass.

I reach the meadow and scan for critters; nothing this morning. So I continue up the 2 switchbacks stopping to look back down on the meadow.

Soon I reach the Pass. I look down on Catherine Lake and find a deer not far from the top!

The lake looks good but it's cloudy and the sun is really not up yet so I start my way up the trail towards Sunset Pass stopping at my favorite overlook.

I reach the Pass and stop for the view of Mt Timp.

I see 2 hunters making their way up towards Devils Castle. Perhaps I'll meet them as I'm heading that way.

I walk along the ridge, enjoying the Yarrow and other flowers (althought few) along the way. The flowers may be scare but there's awesome views down below.

Finally Devils Castle is in view.

There are lots of Paintbrush here. Unfortunately, there past peak (as are the Lupine). Probably looked awesome 2 weeks ago. (Back towards Sunset Peak.)

I walk over to the Supreme Lift. My camp is down there!

Well, it's time to find out where I went wrong last night as I start down the ski-cat road down to the basin below.

Closest I've been to Devils Castle.

On her slopes I stop to watch a doe and her fawn tracking across the slopes. The fawn still has spots.

Farther down I see those hawks again; two of them. One lands and I finally get a good look.

The road continues winding down and guess where it comes out - at the houses I reached last night. I was on the right trail!

Back near camp in a wetter spot, I find Fringed Grass of Parnassus. Very exciting to find!!

Time to pack up and head home.

Awesome day and camping trip!
