June 14 - Mormon Trail

Sunny day with a high of 77 forecast.

Heading up to the Mormon Trail today for a butterfly check. A little concerned about the snow & freezing temperatures from a week ago.

I arrive around 9am. It's sunny but temps are still in the 50s not expecting much flying until is gets warmed up. Goal is the 3 mile mark but we'll see how things go.

Definitely slow on the way out; just a few flyers (and I mean a few). The return is definitely better.

And no I didn't make it to the 3 mile mark. In fact, I don't think I even went as far as last week. Got a little bored because of the lack of flyers.

But I did see a lot. Highlights include many Weidemeyer's Admiral (especially on the return trip)

a single Mourning Cloak,

Relict Frits are still out there

yet another Red Admiral (two trips in a row - wonder if he's the same guy)

the Coppers are out now both the Lilac Bordered

and Purplish. Probably the purplish Purplish Copper I've ever seen; definitely fresh!

Garita Skipperling also new of the season

as is the Checkered White.

Finally, definitely more Frits out there. Can confirm I saw a Callippe but I'm unsure of the other; thinking Northwestern.

Other butterflies include, 2-tailed and Western Swallowtails, Cabbage White, Boisduvals, Western Tailed and Dotted Blues. And a Silvery Blue.

Northern Crescent,

Field Crescent and Northern Checkerspot.

Ringlets,

Painted Ladies, Checkered Skipper, Northern Cloudywing, Rocky Mt Duskywing

and a battered Dreamy Duskywing (saw fresh ones last week).

A total of 25!
